Sir Gustav Nossal is a highly distinguished Australian immunologist and research biologist. His contributions to medical research have seen him bestowed with an assortment awards and honours, which include being named as Australian of the Year in 2000 and being featured on an Australian stamp in 2002. He was knighted in 1977 for his ground-breaking work in immunology, and was named as one of Australia’s 100 living national treasures in 1997.

Sir Gustav has written seven books and authored more than 400 scientific publications during his career, and has education centres at both the University of Melbourne and Monash University named after him. He is currently working in a variety of roles that deal with medical research and charitable endeavours. Much of his time is in these roles is still focused on immunology and its related fields. Sir Gustav is a professor emeritus within the Department of Pathology at the University of Melbourne. He is a key advisor for the World Health Organisation in the field of immunology and a consultant for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He is also the deputy chairman of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation and the chairman of the Global Foundation Advisory Council.
