CORE SUBJECTS

Fundamentals of Management

In this subject, you will come to understand the importance and objectives of organisational management, the various core frameworks required to design and set up organisations and the tools and techniques effective for the assessment and improvement of organisational performance, including how to identify pertinent trends to improve overall business performance.

Fundamentals of Marketing

In this subject, you will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of marketing, its function in business and the approaches to marketing management. Upon completion of this subject, you will also learn how marketing has evolved in line with digital capabilities, as well as why many fundamentals remain unchanged. You will also develop the ability to articulate basic marketing goals and plans.

Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship

This subject introduces you to what it means to be an entrepreneur, the fundamental tools of the trade and the role of entrepreneurship – both as it has been and as it currently is. You will be introduced to the theoretical concepts of entrepreneurial venture creation in a range of contexts.

Fundamentals of Project Management

In this subject, you will learn what constitutes a project, the various components and stages of a project, as well as the core competencies and approaches of an effective project manager. Taking a broad perspective, this subject introduces you to the similarities of projects between industries, as well as many of the nuances that may be found in particular industries.

Fundamentals of Leadership

In this subject, you will develop a theoretical understanding of leadership in a general business context and how different leadership models apply in different types of organisations. You will investigate the fundamental differences between management and leadership, as well as how leadership capability is developed in individuals and organisations. You will explore the concepts of organisational culture and how the traits of an individual leader can influence the overall culture of a business. In addition, you will develop your own leadership style, linking it to relevant theoretical approaches.

Business Model Analysis

In this subject, you will gain a foundational understanding of the core concepts of a business model and the importance of each of these in creating unique value and sustainable business success. In addition, you will develop skills in assessing both the current and future risk, as well as the opportunity of a business model, based on strategic market analysis and forward planning.

Managerial Communication

In this subject, you will develop your understanding of the importance of utlising various methods of business communications. You will be introduced to methodologies and techniques in both formal and informal communication and will develop your skills in selecting and developing appropriate communication methodologies for various business scenarios and objectives.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

In this subject, you will learn the increasingly important role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and how it has evolved over recent years. In addition to the key considerations of CSR for organisations and the opportunities and risks involved in adopting or ignoring CSR, you will develop your understanding of the various methodologies that are being introduced to foster CSR.

Corporate Structuring and Business Law

In this subject, you will develop an understanding of the law in relation to business. You will come to understand the various business structuring options and the benefits and drawbacks of each, as well as the processes involved in setting-up these respective structures. Beyond this, you will develop the skills and understanding to interpret basic business laws and learn about the digital economy and the associated new breed of high-growth digital businesses. In addition to exploring the theoretical understanding of the differences between digital and physical organisations and the methods of developing and delivering value to customers, you will develop skills in identifying digital business opportunities and risks for established organisations. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to design business models for digital organisations, as well as adapt more traditional business models to suit the digital economy.

Digital Business and Disruption

Technology has changed the game—whether it be as a result of the emergence of new online platforms, different ways of providing services due to the advent of mobile applications or the transformation of traditional business models—digital business practices have become both desired and necessary. As a manager, marketer or entrepreneur, it is vital that you understand both the benefits and limitations of digital business so that you too can be more effective and innovative. In completing this subject, you will be able to effectively identify key opportunities and strategies to maximise business performance through the use of digital technology.

Managing Money and Finance

In this subject, you will develop your understanding of and skills in the foundations of business accounting. You will also gain the knowledge and skills required to prepare and interpret basic financial reports for organisations of varying maturity, while also exploring the theories that underpin business accounting. In addition, you will develop the capability to identify any financial trends of note, in order to make recommendations to decision makers of financial changes that should be made.

 

Practising Leadership

In this subject, you will develop your theoretical understanding of leadership in a general business context and how different leadership models apply to various types of organisations. You will investigate the fundamental differences between management and leadership, as well as how leadership capability is developed in individuals and organisations. Design Thinking for Business

In this subject, you will be introduced to design thinking and why this modern business concept is useful and valuable to all kinds of businesses. In particular, you will engage with the design thinking process—from ideation through to evaluation—as well as exploring the role it plays in current businesses, the theory and philosophy behind design thinking and the different approaches to design thinking. You will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and engage in a design thinking process for an existing organisation, or your own venture.

The Global Economy

In this subject, you will come to understand the new paradigm of business that is the global economy and the resulting implications for both established and new organisations. You will develop your understanding of and ability to identify drivers of global change. You will also learn to articulate and interpret the resulting global trends to identify opportunities and challenges from both an operational and strategic perspective.

Management Strategy

In this subject, you will develop your ability to design effective business strategies for organisations of varying types and stages of maturity. Through an introduction to the fundamentals of strategy, the evolution of strategy and a range of strategic methodologies, you will learn how to respond to specific business scenarios and design proactive strategies towards achieving business goals. In addition, you will investigate how organisations can proactively address their future success, through the effective use of trend analysis techniques.

Managing Diverse Workplaces

In this subject, you will be introduced to the typical opportunities and challenges that arise from teams composed of diverse backgrounds. You will learn how these diverse backgrounds can impact working styles and the type of management and leadership style required for maximum productivity outcomes. Through this subject you will further develop your management and leadership skills in order to be able to identify key staff differences that inform the design of effective management procedures and policies, thereby creating positive working environments.

Managing Employee Relations

In this subject, you will be introduced to the regulations of employment across all types of staff. You will develop your abilities to design workforce policies and procedures in line with Australian law, in order to foster safe and enjoyable work environments. In addition, you will learn fundamental approaches to dealing with various staff challenges in the workplace.

 

Organisational Change

In this subject, you will be introduced to the foundational concepts of organisational change and change management. You will develop your ability to plan proactively, as well as lead and manage the organisational changes that may be required—such as new policy adoption, new product development or some form of innovation.

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS

You choose to complete 1 elective subject from Level 1.

Level 1 Elective Subject 1: Competitive Market Positioning

In this subject, you will build upon basic marketing strategy knowledge to develop a market positioning strategy. You will be introduced to more complex theories and frameworks to support decision-making and the ability for your organisation to position themselves attractively in competitive markets—thereby considering market trends, market composition and competitor strategies and activity.

Level 1 Elective Subject 2: Introduction to Innovation

In this subject, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of innovation, its role within entrepreneurship, as well as the key tools and methodologies used to foster innovation. In addition, you will explore the key differences between innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as the function of innovation within both new and established organisations. Throughout this subject you will develop the ability to inform basic innovation programs and address innovation challenges faced by established organisations.

 

Level 1 Elective Subject 3: Product Management

In this subject, you will develop a deep understanding of what makes up different product types. You will develop your understanding of product life cycles for both goods and services and the various strategies that need to be developed to manage products through each stage. You will also learn how to manage product groups, foster sustainable customer value and identify opportunities for product innovation.

You choose to complete 2 elective subjects from Level 2. 

Level 2 Elective Subject 1: Big Data

In this subject, you will be introduced to the concepts of Big Data and how it can be applied in modern business contexts. You will further develop your understanding of the various methodologies for collecting and interpreting Big Data and apply these to improve business performance. Upon completion of  this subject, you will have a demonstrated capacity to identify and articulate appropriate metrics for measuring business performance across all departments in varying business types. In addition, you will be able to recognise pertinent trends to help improve overall business performance.

Level 2 Elective Subject 2: Social Enterprise

In this subject, you will be given an introduction to the concepts of social entrepreneurship, how it differs from commercial entrepreneurship from a development and operational perspective, as well as the opportunities available to social entrepreneurs in a range of sectors. In addition, you will learn to define the various social enterprise types and how these organisations face the unique challenges of launch, growth and operation. Upon completion of this subject, you will also have gained an understanding of the relevance of social enterprise fostered by established for-profit organisations.

 

Level 2 Elective Subject 3: Market Research

In this subject, you will be introduced to the various types of marketing research. Through developing a deep understanding of the various types of marketing information available and those most appropriate for varying business scenarios, you will develop the capability to design research strategies, in turn creating and interpreting reports to provide useful information to business decision makers. In addition, you will develop your skills in identifying useful market trends and what these trends may mean for the organisation.

Level 2 Elective Subject 4: Applied Entrepreneurship – Concept Development and Validation

In this subject, you will start applying the skills you have developed as aspiring entrepreneurs. In doing so, you will undertake detailed research and planning, as well as practical creative exercises—to create, explore and validate conceptual venture ideas.

You choose to complete 3 elective subjects from Level 3.

Level 3 Elective Subject 1: Advanced Digital Marketing

In this subject, you will be introduced to the various digital marketing strategies that have rapidly evolved in recent years. You will develop the skills and understanding required for designing and implementing these strategies for organisations of various types and stages of maturity, utilising a plethora of modern technologies. In addition, you will develop the skills required to effectively assess and improve digital marketing campaigns, as well as learn how digital marketing plays a crucial role in supporting more traditional techniques.

Level 3 Elective Subject 2: Venture Capital Raising

In this subject, you will develop the skills and understanding necessary to raise capital for new and existing ventures of various types and stages of maturity. In addition to understanding the different  types of funding available and the benefits and drawbacks of each, you will be able to develop strategies to source and raise funds, using accurate venture valuations.

Level 3 Elective Subject 3: Integrated Marketing Communications

In this subject, you will build on skills developed in previous subjects to further develop and explore the concepts and strategies of marketing communications. You will develop and design strategies to communicate messages relevant to particular customer segments and their broader business goals, utilising a variety of media and channels to maximise impact. In addition, you will learn about the foundations of brands and effective branding strategy.

 

Level 3 Elective Subject 4: Marketing of Services

In this subject, you will develop a thorough understanding of the nuances of marketing business services, including the various levels and components of services and how to design marketing strategies specific to particular services, with the goal of maximising value.

Level 3 Elective Subject 5: Marketing Strategy and Planning

In this subject, you will learn how to merge the broad array of skills you have developed, in order to design holistic marketing strategies. You will learn to understand the relevance of broader business challenges, opportunities, goals and marketing strategy, as well as learn how to work with management from other business functions to develop marketing plans.

Level 3 Elective Subject 6: Stakeholder Management

In this subject, you will be given an introduction to the concepts of stakeholder management. You will become exposed to the various categories of stakeholders and the respective expectations and impacts each can have. In doing so, you will gain an understanding of the importance of stakeholder management across industries, as well as the skill sets required to develop effective stakeholder management strategies, which take into account the varied and discrete needs of stakeholder groups.
