Michael Hawker is a businessman and company director with national and international experience gained through a distinguished career in the banking and insurance industries as both a director and non-executive director. Prior to his directorship roles Hawker was CEO and Managing Director of Insurance Australia Group, Group Executive of Business and Consumer Banking at Westpac, Executive Director of Citibank International in Europe, and Deputy Managing Director of Citibank in Australia.
Currently, Hawker holds a number of directorships with both Australian and international companies including Aviva Plc. Group (UK), Macquarie Group, Washington H. Soul Pattinson and Company Limited, and Rugby World Cup Limited (RWC). He is also Chair of the Australian Rugby Union, and a Member of the Executive Committee of the International Rugby Board, and a Member of the Advisory Council of General Enterprise Management Services International Limited (GEMS), a Hong Kong-based private equity fund focused on direct investments in the Asia-Pacific region.
In addition to his business acumen and interests, Hawker is actively involved in fostering relationships between business and the community sector. He was the founder of the Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN) that provides mentoring, partnering and support programs to students and schools; he is the former Chair of the New South Wales Juvenile Diabetes ‘Walk to Cure’ annual fundraising event, the Giant Steps Foundation, the Insurance Council of Australia and the Australian Financial Markets Association; and a former Board Member of The Geneva Association.
Hawker is a Senior Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and in 2010 was made a Member of the Order of Australia.
Hawker joined the Board and became Chair of The George Institute for Global Health in 2011.
