  • With a focus on data and cyber management, our MBA will provide the leaders of tomorrow with an understanding of core business concepts and a diverse set of industry-focused skills through the application of holistic, real-world analysis and an exploration of current business theories.
  • You can expect to graduate with a portfolio of work that addresses some of the most pragmatic realities within the challenging and rapidly changing online business landscape.
  • This is not a technical qualification. This course is designed to provide you with sufficient knowledge of the different programming languages, systems and infrastructures, combined with both local and globally-recognised strategies to successfully liaise with various technical experts and stakeholders to make informed management decisions.
  • This course clearly identifies the various data risks to, and the responsibilities of, every organisation with an online presence. You will focus explicitly on culture, values and dispositions in order to affect change using best cyber security practice, unique to each organisation.

The structure of our programme includes 11 modules, covering a wide range of critical business topics and a Major Applied Industry Project, to provide you with the opportunity to transform theoretical concepts into real-time business projects.

Exit Points: Subject to Advanced Standing Rules, candidates may be eligible to exit with the Graduate Certificate in Data and Cyber Management on completion of 24 credit points.

Module 1: Global Cyber Security and Law

As the “internet of things” integrates further into society, there are heightened risks associated with operating in the digital economy without appropriate cyber security measures. Managers are increasingly being held accountable for protecting important intellectual property and client information and need to make informed decisions. This module explores various legal structures and requirements of organisations from various levels of government and internationally.

Module 2: Risk Analysis and Threat Management

This module explores various cyber risk analysis methodologies which conform with industry standards in this emerging field. Discover the complexities of trying to accurately measure risk and maintain secure networks in rapidly-changing environments and appreciate the intrinsic human relationship frequently associated with various degrees of information breaches.

Module 3: Big Data

Gain an understanding of the key objectives of management and the common techniques utilised to achieve organisational performance. In doing so, learn the challenges that management teams have had to deal with historically, as well as how these challenges have evolved along with technology advances (ICTs, IoTs, cloud computing, etc) and the resulting globalised economy.

Module 4: The Cyber Mindset

Implementing an organisation-wide cyber security change involves commitment from all levels of management, as well as internal and external stakeholders. This requires fundamental organisational paradigm shifts to acquire a cyber mindset. This module will explore the complexities of dealing with all stakeholders when trying to maintain a secure environment, while also unpacking what a cyber mindset means in the 21st Century, with the ever-emerging ‘Internet of Things’.

Module 5: Leadership in Practice

Explore the definitions of leadership in the context of the 21st Century and prepare to develop the necessary capabilities to prosper in this environment. You are required to reflect on your  own experiences and biases to develop an understanding of how these influence your personal leadership style, as well as how you  respond to the leadership of others.

Module 6: Digital Operations and Project Management

In the digital era, organisations have moved to a dynamic project-based management style and this module will provide you with the relevant skills, tools and techniques to become an efficient project manager. Learn how to identify feasible and relevant projects, scope them efficiently into the organisational vision and plan for implementation and successful delivery, on time. Utilise innovative web-based tools and techniques for resource allocation and scheduling and quality and risk management, which have become an industry requirement.

Module 7: Ethics and Decision Making

Ethical decision making in a business environment is acknowledged as both a moral imperative and a key foundation of a sustainable business strategy. In an increasingly connected and globalised environment, customers and key business stakeholders hold moral imperatives front of mind. 

This unit encourages you to engage with and reflect upon the ethical complexities of your industry, organisation and personal goals in a context beyond your business-as-usual environment. An examination of sustainability concerns and the nature of big business will challenge you to reflect upon key aspects of your industry and consumer choices and the implications this has for strategic business decisions. 

Through an exploration of behavioural ethics and business sustainability, you will progress to frameworks that assist individuals and teams to make better decisions. You will gain a deeper understanding of your own ethical behaviours and learn how to make ethical decision-making a key area of competitive advantage for your organisation.

Module 8: People and Culture

There is an increasing awareness across business thought leaders that people and culture holds the key to organisational success. In the context of major shifts in the workplace, including new business models demanding new skill sets, greater workforce instability, increased multiculturalism and a renewed focus on gender, the complexities of this business function have never been greater.

In this module, you will examine what inclusion and diversity means in the workplace, how to strengthen your organisation through employees and how to manage organisational change. In particular, you will reflect upon your own experiences and current people management practices to evaluate their effectiveness in these areas. A focus upon the changing nature of the workforce will encourage you to think beyond what has always been done to how you need to adapt to the 21st century innovation economy.

Module 9: Finance for Managers

In this subject, we introduce core concepts and practices relating to managerial accounting, finance, managerial economics and ethics. Managerial accounting involves partnering in management decision-making, devising planning and performance management systems and providing expertise in financial reporting and control to assist management in the formulation and implementation of an organisation’s strategy. 

Finance covers the fundamental concepts in corporate finance and capital markets.

Managerial economics is a discipline that combines economic theory with managerial practice. It helps in bridging the gap between the problems of logic and the problems of policy. The subject provides you with powerful tools and techniques for managerial policy-making. 

Ethics focuses on understanding the importance of ethical behaviour and its significant contribution to keeping the economy and business running.

Module 10: Business Strategy

In such a dynamic and competitive business environment, it is getting progressively more difficult for companies to create and sustain competitive advantage. Companies can deliver great products and services, but without an effective and unifying strategy, can fall short on execution. This subject aims to define the DNA of an effective strategy. In doing so, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of strategy and the role it can and should play in business operations. We will explore the various strategic frameworks and concepts that can be adopted and importantly, define the various scenarios in which they can be deployed, towards fostering successful business outcomes. 

The role of strategy in developing competitive advantage will also be explored, including the various ways strategy can drive growth and effective business performance. Lastly, methodologies in managing strategic change will be explored, helping you to develop a well-rounded understanding of why and how to implement effective business strategy.

Module 11: Entrepreneurship and Innovation

This module  investigates entrepreneurship and the role innovation plays in shaping the culture of a firm. We explore the various ways visionary attitudes can transform existing businesses and offer frameworks and tools to commercialise new ideas.

PROJECT

Major Applied Industry Project

You will complete the industry project with project responsibilities across leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation and strategy and risk. You are fundamentally responsible for the delivery of client value through your group’s successful completion of the industry project.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define the problem: You will be able to understand the broad context and complexity of an industry and its resultant challenges. You will be able to frame complex industry problems and effectively communicate them to others, with both specialist and non-specialist expertise;
  • Gather and analyse evidence: You will develop and refine the skills of efficiently collecting, analysing and synthesising data to identify complex industry challenges through both qualitative and quantitative approaches;
  • Demonstrate management: You will develop project management knowledge and skills and then administer projects by drawing on practical experience and theoretical approaches to management. You will be able to critically apply leading management theories to specific project contexts in order to effectively achieve project goals;
  • Develop strategic vision: You will develop frameworks for achieving organisational change, drawing on innovative and entrepreneurial solutions. You will develop strategic visions that identify business opportunities and appropriately incorporate relevant risk reasoning into proposed business solutions;
  • Demonstrate leadership in cyber and data management: You will be able to communicate the vision effectively and mitigate implementation risks to achieve effective cyber and data change management through both creative and pragmatic approaches. You will be prepared for leading organisational change;
  • Understand, communicate and apply advanced theoretical knowledge: You will be able to apply these skills in the fields of data security, leadership and people management to real world contemporary business settings; and
  • Critically apply cross-disciplinary knowledge in decision making: You will demonstrate an understanding of global business challenges and key management strategies to positively influence a data mindset with creativity for innovation and data security contexts.
